One of the ironies of Texas’s anti–Planned Parenthood campaign is that while opposition to abortion sparked it, it leaves abortion clinics unscathed. There are 14 Planned Parenthood clinics in Texas that offer abortion and 51 that provide other sexual-health services. To avoid any commingling of funds, they are run as entirely separate corporations. Because the abortion clinics receive no public money, they’ve been unaffected by the state’s funding cutbacks. Women’s access to other services, though, has been seriously impaired. In Waco, Planned Parenthood’s reproductive-health clinic has gone from three full-time nurse practitioners to one, with another working a third of the time. This year, the clinic is only able to see half the patients it saw last year.

Planned Parenthood Under Attack: Fighting Back In Texas

WOW. I knew that TX had decided to forgo the federal Medicaid money so they could prevent Planned Parenthood from getting money because the state didn’t like abortion. And I knew they were willing to let 130,000 low-income people go without healthcare. But I did NOT know that doing so would have no effect on the abortion clinics at all. I don’t think what they’re doing is right on any level whatsoever; hell, I think the Hyde Amendment should be repealed immediately. But how are they going to justify this even to the most conservative person? If they’re not even keeping money away from abortion providers (the supposed reason for this political play in the first place), then how do they justify leaving their most vulnerable citizens with no healthcare? What the fuck are they thinking? What could this possibly accomplish? And what about the low-income people depending on these clinics for care during their pregnancies? Working class people already have more health risks even before pregnancy. This will surely contribute to increasing “maternal” morbidity, “maternal” mortality, and infant sickness and death. JFC, Texas. You’re just so pro-life it hurts.

That’s the problem with people. At least the ones I know. They complain about Planned Parenthood, and want it shut down because they THINK that abortion is what it’s all about. But they don’t realize that a majority of what it’s about is preventing pregnancies or even helping pregnancies. And what these people who are trying to shut it down are doing is simply creating more possibility of women being unable to get birth control, thus creating more chance that a woman will get pregnant unwillingly, and what will she do? Go to the abortion clinic that is still open. While the poor workers at Planned Parenthood go without jobs. Because nopony is willing to do any damn research on the topic.

Ahem…Hi, guys. Listen…I’m in a bit of a bind. Spring Break is starting this weekend. I’m set to go to Dallas to see the guy I love, but there’s a problem. I have a ride…no way to pay said ride. My mother is refusing to help me. So much for family ties. Heh. So…I know it’s rather last minute, but I’ve opened up commissions, in the hopes that I can raise enough. My goal is $50. I have $10.
